Oyster Restoration & OysterKrete
Description
OysterKrete™ is a patent-pending concrete mixture specifically formulated to attract naturally occuring oyster larvae and to stimulate attachment of oysters to the OysterKrete surface.

OysterKrete disk with substantial oyster growth after 4 months in Machipongo River, VA.
Biologically enhanced material is specifically engineered to attract oysters. OysterKrete can be used to fabricate cultch material used to grow oysters. This material has an attractant and texture that oysters need to survive and mature in their natural environments. This material can also be used to fabricate larger structures, i.e. the Oysterbreak, which fosters a more vibrant ecosystem and reduces shorline erosion.
OysterBreak™ Applications
The OysterBreaks are structures designed to use the oyster’s inherent nature of clustering to form a unique coastal structure. The OysterBreak initially establishes the height and width desired to function as a successful erosion control structure. As oysters grow on the structure, the OysterBreak will increase its ability to function. The advantages of the oysterbreak over traditional rock breakwaters include:
- More economical due to decreased amount of material deployed
- Oysters enhance ecology and are foundations species for environment
- Structure can repair itself and adjust to environment
OysterBreak structures can be designed using traditional rock breakwater design guidelines. The individual units can be sized based on geotechnical and hydrodynamic conditions. These OysterBreaks have also been recognized to dissipate high frequency waves that are common in bays and estuaries.

Other OysterKrete Applications
Harvestable cultch material for maintaining active oyster beds.

OysterKrete plugs with newly settled oysters.
